CHRIS' CORNER

Cris Rio - Lt. Gov of Marketing

Volume 2, Issue 8

April 8, 2007

Greeting:  This is the 8th issue of Volume 2 of Chris’ Corner, covering the activities of February 07, and of course anything else of importance, or that I want to say.  Items to be covered:

  • Training:                                   CHECK YOUR CLUBS RECORDS PLEASE
  • Educational Goals:                    Please Submit them
  • Contests / Conferences District 04/27-28/07, Region 06/22-23/07
  • Next Year’s Officers                Nominating Committee Deadline, 03/16/07
  • Chris’ Clinic                             Sunday March 11, 8:01pm
  • Training:  The deadline for training of Club Officers has past…but it is not too late to update the records.  Please check your Distinguished Club Report using the link on Toastmaster.org.  I will update the records but can ONLY do that if you let me know.  If you are not sure how to check, just ask and I will help you. To date, there are 60 (of 120 paid clubs) that have 4 or more officers trained.  However, there are many listed with 2 or three.  In some cases one person holds multiple offices.  They can get credit for both, but again, ONLY if I am told.

Division & Area Governors, please check as well, and if clubs sent you lists, or you did training – get me the information, please.  Sending it to TI, or anyone else will not help.  I enter the records on line.
  • Educational Goals:  The response, from the letter the district recently sent concerning educational awards, has been greater than expected.  The list was not perfect, and we learned a lot, from your recommendations, on how to improve the process.  We also uncovered some errors in TI’s records, and some instances of awards that for whatever reason, were not recorded at TI.  If you have not checked the list, please do, and consider using it to help encourage (not bully whip) members to achieve.

As of March 07 we have just about 85 CCs (June 30 goal 203) and 30 ACs (Goal 58).  Thank you all, your achievements are beginning to pile up.  Lets keep getting credit for the work we are doing.  I know that there are many awards that have not been entered.  For example, Area 4 has 5 active clubs.  I have 8 of the 11 awards.  Besides my awards, the other 3 are all in the FAA Club.  Other Areas have similar statistics.  What does this mean?  Glad you asked.  It means that many of our members have completed manuals, leadership awards, etc. and their club has not submitted them.  Please submit awards so the members can get that nice certificate, and letter to her/his employer.
  • Contests / Conferences:  Please check the website to see when your contest is - and please list your Area and Division Contests on the website.  The spring cycle is International Speech and Evaluation.  Any member is eligible to compete in the evaluation contest.  A member must have completed 6 speeches to be eligible for the International Speech Contest.  Clubs Chartered After June 30, 2006 are exempt from the 6 speech rule.

A few reminders:  Clubs in Areas that have 4 or clubs or less, may send 2 contestants to each contest.  A club can select contestants any way they wish – but if it is by contest, must follow the rules.  Remember that an evaluation contest needs a model speaker – please give him/her some time to prepare.  I have ordered trophies (not engraved) for all Area and Division Contests.

The District Level Contests will be on Saturday April 28 at the District Conference in Grantville, PA.  The Region Level Contest will be on Saturday June 23 at the Region VII Conference in Philadelphia, PA.  Please check the website (tmdistrict38.org) for more information.  Also, volunteers to help at Region are still needed.  Contact info: Co-Chair: Jack Levitt, DTM, Co-Chair: Todd Greenwood, DTM.

  • Next Year’s Officers:  Division Governors and Lt Governors and the District Governor will be elected at the District 38 Business meeting on Saturday April 28 at the Contest.  There are forms on the District Website if you wish to run or nominate someone.

The incoming District Governor (you still have time to run against me) will be appointing Area Governors and the rest of the District Staff.  Please let me know if you are interested or have recommendations.  Start looking for Club Officers now.  It is not to early.
  • Chris’ Clinic:  The last call was on SUNDAY February 11th at 8:01 pm.  It would have been about how quality meetings boost membership – but no one called in until after 8:30 and I was not on the line.  We will try again on Sunday March 11 for Quality Meetings = Membership Growth.  Please remember, these calls are for you, and there is Q&A at the end.

What I would like to see happen – still.

  • Sunday Night Toastmasters, Chris’ Clinic, You Make the Call:  My vision – a few people call in on time.
  • Educational Awards:  My vision – people will get their books signed and turn in their awards.  Maybe even use the CL book too.  If you help with a contest, a membership drive, a PR campaign, or even take part in a meeting – get credit!  It’s easy.
  • Area Governor Visits:  My vision – Area Governors will visit each club, give a manual speech, and complete one assignment in the new CL book at each visit.  YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO COMPLETE YOUR VISITS and recommend a successor.  Many thanks to those that have already done this.
  • Training:  My vision – All Incoming Area & Division Governors will attend the June 16th District Sponsored Training.
  • Contests:  My vision – Each club and area will have a contest and there will be at least 4 contestants in each.  Also, the contests will be well attended and run properly.
  • Websites, www.toastmasters.org (check your information) & www.tmdistrict38.org
  • District Conference:  My vision - 200 Members will attend, all clubs will be represented, and we will accomplish realignment without the outbreak of World War III.

So long ‘til next time, and hoping my vision is clear, Chris
